Alec Brunson continues his stellar season

Updated: Dec 19, 2021

In what can only be described as a rough stretch for Wabash Valley's Own it is important to find the silver linings. For the REX this season, one of those silver linings has been Alec Brunson. The left fielder and third baseman has been one of the most consistent forces for the REX since the beginning of the season.

Brunson is currently top three in home runs in the Prospect League. He has hit 12 bombs so far this season including two last night in the 13-7 loss to the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp. At one point, his bat was so hot he hit six home runs in just over a week's worth of games. He is top 15 in RBI with 37. He is also hitting for a good average at .268 in 49 games played.

His defense has been nothing to scoff at either. Brunson has made some amazing catches at Bob Warn Field. He robbed a grand slam from the Lafayette Aviators when he elevated his glove over the left field wall. He also had a game winning diving catch against the Danville Dans earlier this month. In his natural position at left field, he has only committed two errors.

Brunson spoke on his play this summer. "Even with the team having a rough year, my focus at the plate hasn't changed. It has been the same from the first game till now. Every at-bat was and is important to me no matter what the score of the game is. The point of this summer, was to grow as a player in the batter's box and out in the field."

Assistant Coach Jacob Harden had this to say about Brunson's performance this season, "Brunson has been swinging the bat well all summer. However, he did have a stretch where he was the hottest in the league. To see him getting back to that form is great to finish the summer." Come out and see Brunson and the rest of the REX players tonight as they take on the Alton River Dragons at Bob Warn Field at 6:30 PM EST.
