REX Baseball pulled out a 9-8 victory in a high-octane battle against the Dubois County Bombers on Friday night, fueled by a relentless 13-hit attack and standout performances from Gabe Wright and Felix Polanco.
Wright went a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs scored, while Polanco drove in four to lead REX in a back-and-forth slugfest that saw both teams combine for 17 runs despite Dubois managing just four hits.
REX struck early in the 1st inning. Wright reached base and came around to score on a groundout by Polanco, giving REX a 1-0 lead on an unearned run.
Dubois tied the game in the bottom half when Markham scored on an RBI groundout by Sorgius, making it 1-1.
The second inning belonged to REX. Wally Diaz launched a solo homer to left center to start the rally. His 7th of the season. Later in the inning, Andrew Carter singled to left to bring in Ben Jones, and Wright followed with an RBI infield single that scored Carter. Gio Mendoza also crossed the plate during the frame, as REX put up four runs to take a 5-1 lead.
Dubois chipped into the lead in the bottom of the 2nd when Ivers scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-2.
REX continued to apply pressure in the 4th. Polanco singled through the left side to bring home Mendoza, and moments later, Delvis Claudio smashed a two-run double to right center, scoring both Polanco and Wright to stretch the lead to 8-2.
But Dubois didn’t go away quietly. In the bottom of the 4th, H. Markham grounded out to first to score Seymore. Then, with runners on base, a wild pitch brought home Miles and J. Russell, slicing REX’s lead to 8-6.
In the 6th, Dubois pulled even closer. Markham singled to left center, scoring Russell, and a sacrifice fly by Sorgius brought in Miles to make it 8-8.
REX answered in the 8th. Wright led off the inning with his fourth hit of the night, and Polanco came through again with a sharp single through the right side to drive him in — his fourth RBI of the game and the eventual game-winner.
Despite giving up eight runs, the REX pitching staff held Dubois County to just four hits. Offensively, REX's 13-hit barrage was led by Wright’s 4-for-4 performance and Polanco’s 4 RBIs. Claudio added a key two-run double as REX overcame multiple comebacks to lock down a gritty 9-8 road win.
REX come back home to Bob Warn Field on June 25th to take on Lafayette at 6:30 EDT.
