In the final game of their five-game road trip, REX came up short Friday night in Springfield, falling to the Lucky Horseshoes 7–4 at Robin Roberts Stadium.
REX struck first in the top of the first inning. Felix Polanco singled to center to drive in Nomar Garcia, who scored all the way from first following a misplay in the outfield. The run was ruled unearned, giving REX an early 1–0 lead.
Springfield answered quickly in the bottom of the second. Jonny Marquez launched a two-run home run to right field—his first of the season—scoring Enrico Veach and putting the Horseshoes up 2–1.
REX tied it up in the fifth, capitalizing on another Springfield miscue. Polanco lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Carder Reich to make it 2–2, but the inning-ending play also featured an error that allowed Garcia to advance into scoring position.
In the bottom half of the fifth, Springfield regained the lead when Cole Bush came home on a throwing error during a stolen base attempt, putting the Horseshoes up 3–2.
The home team extended the lead in the sixth when Louie Bartletti drilled a solo homer to right—his first of the year—to make it 4–2.
REX battled back again in the seventh. Polanco came through once more, singling to left to drive in Reich and cut the deficit to 4–3. It marked Polanco’s third RBI of the night.
But Springfield put the game away in the bottom of the seventh, plating three runs. Roman Sienza delivered a sacrifice fly to score Bush, Bartletti followed with an RBI single, and Jarrett Chapman capped the inning with a run-scoring double to center, pushing the lead to 7–3.
Neither team was able to muster another rally as Springfield won 7-3 against REX.
Polanco led the way offensively for REX, finishing 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs. Garcia reached base multiple times and scored twice, while Reich also crossed the plate twice.
REX finish the longest road trip of the season 2-3. Springfield continue to stay hot, as they rise to 4-1
REX are back in action for the HOME OPENER on June 1st at 4:35.
