Coming off back-to-back nailbiter finishes, REX heads to take on a familiar foe in the Springfield Lucky Horseshoes. Playing two 7-inning games to make up a rainout from earlier in the week.
Game 1
REX opened the doubleheader with a dominant 5-0 win over Springfield, powered by a relentless start at the plate and a lights-out performance on the mound by Samuel Guadamuz.
Emil Estrella got things rolling in the top of the 1st with a three-run homer to left, scoring Felix Polanco and Nomar Garcia. All three runs were unearned, but they set the tone early and put REX up 3-0.
In the 2nd, Bryson Carpenter crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Garcia, and in the 4th, Garcia added another RBI with a sacrifice fly to center, bringing home Gio Mendoza to extend the lead to 5-0.
On the mound, Guadamuz was dominant. The right-hander threw a complete game shutout across 7 innings, allowing just two hits while striking out six. His efficiency and command kept Springfield off balance all game and secured the win in game one.
Game 2
REX capped off the doubleheader with an offensive surge early but couldn’t hold off a late push from Springfield in a tightly contested second game.
The top of the 2nd was a breakout inning for REX, beginning when Gabe Wright came home on a wild pitch to open the scoring. Moments later, Delvis Claudio ripped a two-run single to left, bringing in Gio Mendoza and Wally Diaz. Felix Polanco followed with a base hit up the middle that plated Claudio and Garcia, giving REX a commanding 5-0 lead.
Springfield began to claw back in the bottom of the 5th. Michael Clarkson drove in two with a single to left, and Louie Bartletti added an RBI single of his own to trim the REX lead to 5-3.
In the 6th, the Horseshoes kept pressing. A wild pitch allowed Enrico Veach to score, and a bases-loaded walk to Nolan Decker brought home another run, cutting the REX advantage to just one.
Breylin Suriel came into the 7th with REX up one. After giving up a one-out single, Suriel was able to work through the traffic for the save.
With the double header sweep, REX move to 8-7 and first in the Central division
