REX score 15 in win against Champion City

Last night, the REX took on the Champion City Kings for the second time in a row. This time the game was in Springfield, OH. The Kings were looking to bounce back after allowing the REX to have a come from behind win the night before. The REX came into the game looking to win their seventh game in their last ten.

The REX started off hot as they crossed home plate three times in the first inning. Left fielder Alec Brunson hit a two RBI double that scored third baseman Kaleb Hannahs and right fielder Jack Leverenz. New catcher Kyle Harbison followed that up with an RBI single that scored Brunson. The Kings got one back in the bottom of the inning, but the REX got hot again in the top of the third. First baseman Rob Weissheier started things off with his second home run in as many days. Then with bases loaded, center fielder Sammy Rowan earned a base on balls to score Leverenz. Second baseman Alec Atkinson was able to knock in Harbison and shortstop Becker on a single. Rowan finished out the runs for the inning when he scored on a wild pitch. The REX led 8-1 after two and a half innings, but the Kings came roaring back with five runs of their own in the bottom of the third. Champion City was able to make it a one run ball game when they scored on a balk in the bottom of the fourth.


Leading 8-7 in the fifth inning, the REX were able to get going again. This time scoring four runs. Designated hitter Clay Wisner crossed home on a single by Atkinson. Rowan scored a run on a single by Hannahs. Weissheier continued his strong season with an RBI two-bagger that scored Atkinson. Lastly, Hannahs scored on a sacrifice fly by Brunson. The Kings scored two in the bottom of the sixth to make it 12-9, but from there on it was all REX.

In the eighth, Harbison hit a two RBI double that scored Leverenz and Brunson. In the ninth the REX added an insurance run when Leverenz singled and Brunson scored. The REX defeated the Kings by a final score of 15-9. Wabash Valley’s Own improved to 7-6 on the season. Indiana State University’s Cole Gilley was credited with the win.


The REX are back in action tonight at Bob Warn Field to take on the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp at 6:30 PM EST.
